Thanks to all who helped China earthquake relief fund prosper I had just returned from a photographic tour in Yunnan Province when I heard about the earthquake that devastated China on May 12. I decided to sell the photographic DVDs of my images, which exhibit the true beauty of China and its people, to raise money for the earthquake relief fund through the Canadian Red Cross. The sale of the DVDs (including private donations and corporate sponsors) and a fundraiser banquet at Dragon Court Restaurant on June 22, 2008 grossed approximately $41,000. I would like to thank James Cowie and his staff at Stan C. Reade, who designed the cover and produced the DVDs, and Fuji Film Canada who donated the discs. The congregation at the Church of St. Jude's and my co-workers in both the private and public sectors opened their wallets and were amongst the strongest supporters. Special thanks to Cargill AgHorizons, Zaritsky Penny Chartered Accountants, Logan Funeral Home, Harris Funeral Home, and the enthusiastic support of people from British Columbia to Nova Scotia for their generosity. Sidney Siu London Independent Living Centre says thanks for fundraiser support The Independent Living Centre London & Area held our Come Walk With Me fundraising event on June 21. The rain stopped long enough and the sun shone on us as we raised over $6,000 to support the programs and services of our resource centre for people with disabilities. Thank you to our sponsors -- Factor Gas, General Dynamics, Scotiabank-Cherryhill, Scotiabank-Commissioners Court, Voyageur Transportation, Dura Med, CAW Local 1520, Collins Barrow, London Audiology Consultants and our printing sponsor, Sterling Marking Products. Thank you to all the businesses and individuals who donated the many prizes participants eagerly awaited at the end of the course. Thank you to London-Fanshawe MP Irene Mathyssen who was our official starter for the event. Also, thanks goes to Attorney General Chris Bentley who joined us and showed his support at the beginning of the event. And thanks to all the participants who helped us reach our goal for this year. A good time was had by all as we walked, wheeled, played and barbecued the afternoon away. We invite you back for next year, same time, same place. Bring a friend, and let's set another record together. Pamela Quesnel Executive Director The Independent Living Centre London & Area www.ilcla.ca Rescuers as well as Iveys shown gratitude by widow This is a belated thank-you letter that I am writing to all the wonderful people who came to the rescue of my dear husband and myself on June 25, 2007, when our barbecue tank exploded. Our neighbours were the first on the scene and then the firefighters arrived in a matter of seconds, followed by the police and ambulance. I know they did everything they could to help, particularly my husband who was badly burned. He was rushed to Victoria Hospital to the Ivey trauma unit where he passed away July 18, even though they did their very best to save him. We in London are blessed to have been the beneficiaries of the Ivey family in so many ways. My family and I are deeply indebted to all of you. Shirley Coleman London Shoreline cleaners recruited I'm writing on behalf of the 15th annual TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup. Each September, more than 50,000 Canadians help clean our shorelines and in 2007, 87,000 kilograms of garbage were recovered from more than 1,700 kilometres of shorelines, oceans and waterways. We are trying to recruit volunteers so we can continue to preserve Canada's natural resources, protect our wildlife and ensure our oceans and waterways are kept clean. Participating in a shoreline cleanup is easy: choose a location, date and time, and register by visiting www.vanaqua.org/cleanup or calling 1-877-427-2422. All registrants will receive cleaning supplies and the first 50,000 will also receive a free T-shirt. Registration ends Aug. 31. Hailey Miles On behalf of the TD Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup Hip, hip, hurray for Brad! A belated "thank you" to a wonderful City of London employee named Brad who lives in Lucan and who kindly stopped when asked to assist this lady in "tire" distress in the parking lot of the Dollarama at Hyde Park and Fanshawe Park roads on April 9. Brad went above and beyond to help me get on my way safely. Since our meeting, I've been quite ill and unable to thank him till now. I appreciate and thank you Brad for your kindness. Jan Mellace London Kudos to those who searched Port beach for missing child I would like to thank the lifeguards and the 60 or so members of the general public who searched for a missing girl at the beach in Port Stanley on July 13. The good news is that she was found on the beach, safe and sound. The bad news was that out of 2,000-plus people at the beach, only about 60 came forward to help search the water for her. The lifeguards did a great job of quickly organizing the members of the public who stepped forward to assist. Those who helped did a great job at following directions and keeping things as calm as possible. I hope if this sort of situation happens again that more people can be morally and socially conscious and do something to help. Reid Christie London Tot's care at Children's Hospital makes family a regular donor Until April 27, I, like many people, listened to the annual radio-a-thon benefiting the Children's Hospital of Western Ontario, but never took the next step of donating. Then our family was involved in a serious motor vehicle collision and our then 15-month-old daughter Claire suffered a catastrophic brain injury. It was then that we realized how blessed we are to live in a community with a hospital such as Children's Hospital. Available at our fingertips was the best in care, equipment and research. The professionals who cared for our daughter were all the best of the best and every one treated both Claire and our family with a professionalism and compassion that I believe cannot be matched. Following our experience I truly believe that all Londoners and those who live in the geographical area that Children's Hospital serves need to reconsider financial support for this amazing facility. It takes a great deal of money to render the care and services that are required by the children in hospital, monies that aren't always provided through government sources. Our family has become a regular supporter of the hospital through the Caring Hearts program and it is my hope others will read this letter and make a similar decision. Roslynn Marie Norman Mt. Brydges Kudos for Angelo's Bakery for agency bread donations I would like to thank a charitable London business. On a daily basis, Angelo's Bakery offers its day-old bread to service agencies across London. These agencies serve the bread to people in our city who need it. Angelo's is most generous with what they give to us, and we are very grateful. The store's substantial gifts feed many people. Thank you, Angelo's, for being so compassionate and for sharing your bread. You are a wonderful symbol of the caring and generosity that make this world a better place.
