HUNTSVILLE -- London Free Press sports columnist Morris Dalla Costa won the Ontario University Athletics media award at the annual OUA coach of the year dinner last night at the Deerhurst Resort.
Dalla Costa has covered sports for The Free Press for 13 years. He worked an additional 11 years as a general columnist for the paper. He also worked at newspapers in Oshawa and Kenora. He is a graduate of Ryerson's journalism program.
Next month, Dalla Costa is covering the Euro 2008 soccer tournament in Austria and Switzerland for The Free Press and Sun Media.
He will go forward as the OUA nominee for the Fred Sgambati Award, presented to a member of the news media who has made a major contribution to the development and growth of Canadian interuniversity sport.
Sgambati, a well-respected reporter/broadcaster, was a great supporter of university athletics in Canada. A former University of Toronto athlete and university football official, Sgambati was the radio voice of the College Bowl (now the Vanier Cup) for its first 13 years.
Dalla Costa was praised in a OUA release: "From previews to profiles, game recaps to year-in-review pieces, Dalla Costa and the sports staff at The London Free Press have been a major force in promoting university athletics in London and throughout the province and country. Both qualitatively and quantitatively, Dalla Costa stands out because of his dedication to make university sport more relevant in the London and provincial community."
Free Press sports editor Dave Langford agrees.
"Morris has worked extremely hard at doing the best job he can in covering local sports. And it's now paying off," Langford said.
