After a near-fatal accident and two months alone in a hospital recovering without the day-to-day support of family and friends, Allan Richman gained a unique perspective on patient care.
|
He decided to leave a gift of life insurance to St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation, because seeing first hand the compassionate care Parkwood Hospital provided to all of its patients and clients, he wanted to ensure that quality of care will be there for everyone who needs it.
Seventeen years ago, Allan Richman was travelling to Ottawa. It was April 26 - a day that will be etched in his mind forever. About 15 minutes outside of the city he was involved in a serious motorcycle event. A centrifugal force threw him from his bike and he landed face up in water. He remembers hearing someone calling out to him and he remembers slipping in and out of consciousness. With a few broken ribs, a ruptured spleen and serious internal injuries, Allan was lucky to be alive. He was rushed to an Ottawa hospital where he spent close to two months recovering from his injuries. Alone, in a city where he had few friends or family, he felt vulnerable and was forced to be his own advocate in the health care system.
When he was well enough, he returned home to London.
Years later, expressing his interest in health care in our community, Allan was invited to tour Parkwood Hospital, part of St. Joseph's Health Care, London. He was deeply moved by what he saw. "When I visited Parkwood I had a feeling it was the kind of facility that was aware of both the physical and emotional needs of the patients. There was definitely a sincere and genuine caring for the patients. I saw a very different kind of relationship with patients than I had experienced."
When Allan was recently revising his estate plan, he realized that he had more insurance than he needed, and he thought of how he might put it to the best use. After his tour of Parkwood Hospital, he decided to make a legacy gift to St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation with Parkwood Hospital as a beneficiary.
"It's important as we age, that we minimize the emotional trauma and isolation patients may feel through their hospital experience." Allan's gift of life insurance will be put to use wherever the greatest needs are at Parkwood at the time the gift is realized. His gift will be used to meet immediate capital needs and augment frontline patient care for patients in the Rehabilitation Program at Parkwood.
It's a gift from someone who wants to make a difference.
It's easy to make a legacy gift that will help shape the future of health care for generations to come. For more information, please contact St. Joseph's Health Care Foundation at 519-646-6085.
